Unison Invocation - From the Prayers of Dr. Martin Luther King Our loving Father, from Thy hand have come all the days of the past. To Thee we look for whatever good the future holds. Hymn “Lord of the Dance” UMH #261 I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth. At Bethlehem I had my birth. [Refrain:] Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be, and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he. I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee, but they would not dance and they would not follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; they came to me and the dance went on. (Refrain) I danced on the sabbath when I cured the lame, the holy people said it was a shame; they whipped and they stripped and they hung me high; and they left me there on a cross to die. (Refrain) I danced on a Friday and the sky turned black; it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back; they buried my body and they thought I’d gone, but I am the dance and I still go on. (Refrain) They cut me down and I leapt up high, I am the life that’ll never, never die; I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. (Refrain) Old Testament Reading - Ruth 1: 1-18 Gospel Reading - Mark 12: 28-34 God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God! October 24, 2021 – 9:00 AM Prelude Welcome and Announcements Interlude Welcoming the Light of Christ and inviting the neighborhood to worship. *Call to Worship Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Calling Song "How Majestic Is Your Name" TFWS #2023 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify your name: Prince of Peace, mighty God; O Lord God Almighty. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify your name: Prince of Peace, mighty God; O Lord God Almighty. Responsive Reading from Psalm 126 Leader: When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion we were like those who dream. People: Then our mouths were filled with laughter, and our tongues with shouts of joy. Leader: Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” All: Yes, the Lord has done great things for us! Let us rejoice. Unison Invocation O God, we are in awe of your grace. By that grace transform our gratitude into courage. Make us bold and visionary enough to pray not so much for victories or success but for worthy battles engaged, scars of faith endured, and the company of fellow believers enjoyed. We thank you in the name of Jesus. Amen. Hymn "My Life Flows On" TFWS #2212 My life flows on in endless song, above earth’s lamentation. I catch the sweet, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation. Refrain: No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that Rock I’m clinging. Since Love is lord of heav’n and earth, how can I keep from singing? Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing. It finds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] What though my joys and comforts die, I know my Savior liveth. What though the darkness gather round? Songs in the night he giveth. [Refrain] The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing! All things are mine since I am his! How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] Old Testament Reading - Job 42:1-8 New Testament Reading - Mark 10:46-52 God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God! Offertory with Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Prayer Song "Seek Ye First" UMH #405 Seek ye first the Kingdom of God And His righteousness And all these things shall be added unto you Allelu Alleluia Ask and it shall be given unto you Seek and ye shall find Knock and it shall be opened unto you Allelu Alleluia Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Message: "Once for All" Hebrews 7:23-28 Commitment Hymn "The Church’s One Foundation" UMH #545 The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, our Lord; we are a new creation by water and the Word. From heav’n he came and taught us what perfect love can be; through life and death he sought us, and rose to set us free. The church in ev’ry nation is one through all the earth; our charter of salvation, one God, one faith, one birth; one name together blessing, one holy food we share, to one hope ever pressing, at one in work and prayer. Still, schisms, tribulation, and hatred fuel our war; we wait the consummation of peace forevermore. The saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, “How long?” And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. Yet we on earth have union with God, the Three in One, and mystic, sweet communion with those whose rest is won. Oh, happy ones and holy! God, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, may live eternally. Benediction: May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors. I can hear the brush of angels’ wings, I see glory on each face; surely the presence of the Lord is in this place. The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Responsive Reading from Psalm 27 Leader: The Lord is my light and my salvation - People: whom shall I fear? Leader: The Lord is the stronghold of my life - People: of whom shall I be afraid? Leader: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Help us hear the good news that reminds us that we are loved. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Hymn of Praise “O How I Love Jesus” UMH #170 There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing it’s worth; it sounds like music in my ear, the sweetest name on earth Refrain: O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, Because He first loved me. It tells me of a Savior’s Love, who died to set me free; it tells me of his precious blood, the sinner’s perfect plea. (Refrain) It tells of one whose loving heart can feel my deepest woe; who in each sorrow bears a part that none can bear below. (Refrain) Old Testament Reading Genesis 2:18-24 Gospel Reading Mark 10: 13-16 God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God! Sermon “But We See Jesus” Hebrews 1:1-4 and 2:5-11 Communion Song: “My Jesus, I Love Thee” UMH #172 My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine; for thee all the follies of sin I resign; my gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou; if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. I love thee because thou hast first lov-ed me and purchased my pardon on Calvary's tree; I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow; if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. In mansions of glory and endless delight, I'll ever adore thee in heaven so bright; I'll sing with the glittering crown on my brow: If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, 'tis now. Communion Service Our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Let us confess our sin before God and one another. Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. Our faith has been tested and we have stumbled. Our feet have strayed from the path of Christ and we have wandered from you. We have put our faith in the loud voices of this world, ignoring your whispers. Forgive us, we pray. We do want to follow Jesus, the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. Hear the good news; Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Please pray: Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Strengthen us in mind, body and soul for the days ahead. May your Spirit fill us as we live and pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. Bread and Cup Unison Benediction May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.
