[Refrain] *Responsive Reading Psalm 107: 1-9 UM Hymnal page 830 Leader: O give thanks to the Lord, who is good, whose steadfast love endures forever! People: Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom the Lord has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. Leader: Some wandered in the desert wastes, finding no way to a city in which to dwell; People: hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Leader: Then in their trouble, they cried to the Lord, who delivered them from their distress, People: and led them by a straight way, till they reached a city in which to dwell. Leader: Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. People: For the Lord satisfies those who are thirsty, And fills the hungry with good things. *Unison Invocation: Father, I confess that I worry about many things, rather than trusting Your Word implicitly. Help me to learn to cast all my cares upon You, day by day and moment by moment. As each worry and concern forms in my mind, I pray that I would take that thought captive to Christ. I pray that with Your help, I will look to You and hand over my anxious thoughts to You, knowing that You have promised to carry me through all of life’s difficulties and provide for the needs of me and my family. Thank You for Your goodness and grace. I pray this prayer in the name of Jesus, AMEN. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day! All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in thee. *Responsive Reading Psalm 85 UM Hymnal page 806 Leader: Lord, you showed favor to your land; You restored the fortunes of Jacob. People: You forgave the iniquity of your people; you pardoned all their sin. Leader: You withdrew all your wrath; You turned from your hot anger. People: Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us. Leader: Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger to all generations? Will you not revive us again, That your people may rejoice in you? People: Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. *Unison Invocation: Lord of Hope and Peace, we have come this day asking for your mercy. Grant us your pardon. Congregational Prayer and Lord’s Prayer Hymn “Prayer Is the Soul’s Sincere Desire” UMH #492 (Verses 1-3, 5-6) Prayer is the soul's sincere desire, unuttered or expressed, the motion of a hidden fire that trembles in the breast. Prayer is the burden of a sigh, the falling of a tear, the upward glancing of an eye, when none but God is near. Prayer is the simplest form of speech that infant lips can try; prayer the sublimest strains that reach the Majesty on high. Prayer is the Christians' vital breath, the Christians' native air; their watchword at the gates of death; they enter heaven with prayer. O Thou, by whom we come to God, the Life, the Truth, the Way: the path of prayer thyself hast trod; Lord, teach us how to pray! We Offer Our Gifts Offertory *Doxology “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow” UMH #95 Praise God, from whom all blessing flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. "When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply; the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine. “The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.” *Benediction "God Be with You till We Meet Again" UMH #672 God be with you till we meet again; by his counsels guide, uphold you, with his sheep securely fold you; God be with you till we meet again. Communion Sunday July 10, 2022 Prelude “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by J.S. Bach Welcome and Announcements Welcoming the Light of Christ and inviting the neighborhood to worship * Call to Worship * Calling Song: "Morning Has Broken” UMH #145 Morning has broken, like the first morning, Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird. Praise for the singing, praise for the morning, Praise for them springing fresh from the word. Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven, Like the first dew fall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, Sprung in completeness where His feet pass. Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning, Born of the one light Eden saw play. Praise with elation, praise every morning, God's re-creation of the new day. *Responsive Reading Psalm 82 UM Hymnal page 804 Leader: God is seated in the divine council; and in the midst of the gods holds judgment: People: “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked?" Leader: Give justice to the weak and the orphan; Maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. People: Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Leader: They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. People: I said, “You are gods, godlike offspring, all of you;" Leader: nevertheless you shall die like mortals, And fall like any prince” People: Arise, O God, judge the earth, for to you belong all the nations. *Unison Invocation: Merciful God, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation. Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Scripture Reading: Colossians 1: 1-14 (Pew Bible - Page 1831 ) God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God! Congregational Prayer and Lord’s Prayer Hymn “Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart” UMH #500 1. Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth; through all its pulses move; stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art, and make me love thee as I ought to love. 2. I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies, no sudden rending of the veil of clay, no angel visitant, no opening skies; but take the dimness of my soul away. 3. Hast thou not bid me love thee, God and King? All, all thine own, soul, heart and strength and mind. I see thy cross; there teach my heart to cling. O let me seek thee, and O let me find! 4. Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear. To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh, teach me the patience of unanswered prayer. 5. Teach me to love thee as thine angels love, one holy passion filling all my frame; the kindling of the heaven-descended Dove, my heart an altar, and thy love the flame. We Offer Our Gifts Offertory “O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee” (arranged by Percy Smith) *Doxology “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow” UMH #95 Praise God, from whom all blessing flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Offering Prayer Young People's Moment Message “Engaging God” Pastor Clynton Easley Communion – Singing is in Bold Now as we prepare to gather around Christ’s table, we remember the whole history of salvation. In the beginning, when the was nothing but chaos, God spoke the world into being, and called it good. But, God didn’t stop there, instead God scooped up the dust of the newly formed earth and breathed life into it, and called it very good. And though we have turned away, and our love has failed time and time again, God’s love has remained steadfast. God has pursued us relentlessly with love, even coming to earth in the body of a child, humbling himself with death on a cross, and rising on the third day that we might have new life. And so, as we gather here, we remember. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus broke and blessed the bread. And he said “Do this in memory of what I’ve done and said.” Then he gave them each a piece, and told them what to do. Saying “Eat this is my body broken … for each one of you.” Come to this table, eat of this bread. Eat to remember, he rose from the dead. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus blessed a cup of wine. And he said “This covenant is blood, and the blood is mine.” It was shed for many people, for forgiveness of their sins. And he told them all to drink of it in memory of him. Come to this table, drink of this cup. Remember he loves you, and gave himself up. Let us pray. Holy God, pour out your spirit on all of us gathered. Make for us these gifts, the bread and fruit of the vine. Make them for us the body and blood of Christ, that we might be for the world the body of Christ. Bless the gifts that we now share in memory of your sacrifice. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen. *Hymn “Seek the Lord” UMH #124 1 Seek the Lord who now is present, pray to One who is at hand. Let the wicked cease from sinning, evildoers change their mind. On the sinful God has pity; those returning God forgives. This is what the Lord is saying to a world that disbelieves. 2 “Judge me not by human standards! As the vault of heaven soars high above the earth, so higher are my thoughts and ways than yours. See how rain and snow from heaven make earth blossom and bear fruit, giving you, before returning, seed for sowing, bread to eat: 3 “So my Word returns not fruitless; does not from its labors cease till it has achieved my purpose in a world of joy and peace.” God is love! How close the prophet to that vital gospel word! In Isaiah’s inspiration it is Jesus we have heard! *Benediction "God Be with You till We Meet Again" UMH #672 God be with you till we meet again; by his counsels guide, uphold you, with his sheep securely fold you; God be with you till we meet again. Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet a Jesus' feet; till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.
