People: Great is the Lord in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations. Let them praise your great and awesome name – he is holy. All: Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy. Unison Invocation Heavenly Father, You have chosen to speak to us through prophets, wise leaders, and most clearly and perfectly through your son, Jesus Christ. Give us now the ability to hear, understand, and obey him, the one you have sent because of your great love. We pray in his name. Amen. Gospel Reading John 3:27-31 God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God! Message Part 1 “Responding” The Chosen – Episode 8 Now he (Jesus) had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) John 4:4-9 This passage highlights the ways Jesus breaks down barriers that separate and exclude people from the Kingdom of God. The hateful division between Jews and Samaritans was centuries old by the time Jesus comes on the scene. It dates back to the Eighth Century B.C. Take a look at verse 4. Read it out loud. Look at attached map. Did Jesus ‘have” to go through Samaria because there were no other roads? No. Why did he “have” to go through Samaria? Most importantly, in this passage Jesus reveals that he is indeed the Messiah (John 4:26). Hymn “O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee” UMH #430 O Master, let me walk with thee in lowly paths of service free; tell me thy secret; help me bear the strain of toil, the fret of care. Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear, winning word of love; teach me the wayward feet to stay, and guide them in the homeward way. Teach me thy patience; still with thee in closer, dearer company, in work that keeps faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong; In hope that sends a shining ray far down the future's broadening way, in peace that only thou canst give, with thee, O Master, let me live. Message Part 2 “Breaking Down Barriers” The Chosen – Episode 8 Hymn “I Surrender All” UMH #354 All to Jesus I surrender; all to him I freely give; I will ever love and trust him, in his presence daily live. Refrain: I surrender all, I surrender all, all to thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all. All to Jesus I surrender; humbly at his feet I bow, worldly pleasures all forsaken; take me, Jesus, take me now. [Refrain] All to Jesus I surrender; make me, Savior, wholly thine; let me feel the Holy Spirit, truly know that thou art mine. [Refrain] All to Jesus I surrender; Lord, I give myself to thee; fill me with thy love and power; let thy blessing fall on me. [Refrain] Unison Benediction* May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors. *from Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals Postlude Thank you for Worshiping with us today! (CCLI License #1552544)
